Bixi Makes Sense
In the cycling marketplace, lines are sometimes drawn between commuters and racers, but at Hello Vélo that is not the case. We define ourselves as a performance cycling shop, and I completely believe that things like fit mean just as much to the person riding every day to work, as to the charity rider who rides for a cause or the elite racer pursuing excellence. Everyone wants to be comfortable and to go quick when they want/need to.
Further to that, improvements in streets/infrastructure, including road resurfacing, improved traffic controls AND bike lanes that make it safer and more convenient to ride your bike to work (or for all of life’s needs), also pay off to the racing set – these things mean safer training grounds. So you can see that we are well behind improved cycling infrastructure.
Bixi, the bicycle based taxi service is the latest imrpovement and we are putting ourselves behind the establishment of the service in Toronto. I could certainly picture short jaunts to Dark Horse to carry some lattes back, or up to Gerrard Square for roti and drill bits or even to one of the other local shops to drop off a hard-to-find part. These short trips are perfect on the Bixi.
In a broader sense, the increased access to affordable transportation contributes to making Toronto a more liveable city. And the more people ride a bike as a mode of transportation, the more interested they get in riding regularly, perhaps for fitness, signing up for a charity ride, joining us on a club ride and maybe even doing a race here or there. Well, at least that is what I figure.
And if I could, I would have a station right in front of the shop.
Bixi makes sense to me, that’s why I picked up my membership this week. And so should you. If you still aren’t convinced that Bixi is a good idea for you, come check them out on September 19th at the Queen’s Park Grand Prix – give the bike a test ride, find out just how affordable they are and get behind this next improvement in city infrastructure.
