2009 Mechanic Classes

Hello Vélo’s courses are geared towards those with an interest in becoming proficient at some of the finer points of cycling.  They are taught by certified bike mechanics.  No matter what kind of bike you ride, whether it be a full suspension downhill beast or feather weight carbon climber, these courses will take you to the next level as a mechanic.  Looking for less – jump to the survival course at the bottom of this page.  Looking for more – try one of our wheel building classes.

Unit 1 – Derailleurs and Shifters: $35.00/ 2.5 hrs

Mar 7, Apr 18 and Apr 25 @ 5:30PM

  • This class will teach you the right way to remove, dismantle, install and tune both your front and rear derailleurs.  We’ll also cover the popular shifting systems and by the end you’ll be able to fine tune your gears perfectly.

 

Unit 2 – Crank, Bottom Bracket and Chain: $35.00/ 2.5 hrs

Mar 14 and Apr 4 @ 5:30PM

  • We will do maintenance on your bike’s bottom bracket, take apart the crank and size a chain properly.  Completion of unit 1 is a good idea, but not required.  Covering external, bearing, cartridge and the new BB30 standard.

 

Unit 3 – Wheels, tires and Brakes: $35.00/ 2.5 hrs

Mar 21 and Apr 11 @ 5:30PM

  • How to maintain, your wheel systems and to get your brakes working optimally.  Want to change your own brake pads or true your wheel?  This is the class for you.

 

Unit 4 – Frame, Cockpit, Saddle, Pedals and Accessories: $35.00/ 2.5 hrs

Mar 28  @ 5:30PM

  • We’ll take a look at the bike as a whole and then focus on your key contact points, how to adjust them and keep everything in good working order.  From classic steel beasts to the latest carbon fibre, we will cover it all.

 

Survival Class: $35.00/ 2.5 hrs, dates in May TDB

  • All the things that have gone wrong, will go wrong again and all those things that haven’t gone wrong yet, are just around the corner.  Learn how to survive and prevent many of the cycling mishaps that happen at the most inopportune times, whether at the beginning of your ride, the night before your big race or out on your goal charity ride.

 

Wheel Building – $480 – $800 depending on wheel choice.

  • 10 hours of work and you walk out with your own set of wheels.  Fixed gear, mountain, road, whatever you want.  Prebooking required.
